In the course, Indya and West's relationship is put to the test several times as they encounter various challenges. For example, the two work together in restoring the ranch, explore the emotional load and have to deal with the pressures of small-town life. However in the long run they manage to discover hidden strengths, and empower each other through difficult times and trust is built again between the two.

As they mend their relationship, Indya and West must navigate the decisions that split them apart years ago. They must move through their new reality; West's young daughter inclusive - who is struggling to cope with her mother's abandonment.

Throughout the novel, Devney Perry explores the themes of love, grief, forgiveness and healing; these are drawn throughout the narrative. The story is a powerful adventure of how people can grow apart and come back together, though Scarred but wiser and stronger. In Crossroads, Devney also delves into the complexities of small-town life; characterized by gossip which spreads quickly and where everyone knows each other's business.
